FIUTS in the 70's and 80's

  • 1971-1976 were difficult years for FIUTS – a problem between staff and board leadership caused the resignation of the ED and the loss of many longtime supporters. There was also a split among UW international offices. FIUTS lost all UW funding. The Vietnam War caused a lot of bad feelings on the campus with internationals, and many international students got in trouble for protesting against the war. FIUTS got moved to a single room in the basement of the New Caledonian Building.  It was only because of the efforts of a few volunteers that core programs survived this period. The international show continued until 1972.

  • Jim Leonard started in late 1974, shortly before the New Caledonia burned. Many people refer to this as “the phoenix” – a new FIUTS emerged from the ashes. FIUTS was housed in with the Vice Provost for Student Affairs Al Ulbrickson’s office for one year. In 1977, David Arunga, the first international ASUW president, too office and helped FIUTS secure space in the HUB.  Also in that year, FIUTS produced the first Wednesday Lunch. Jim hired Joan Campbell and started summer programs with Hyogo, Kobe, and Minami Kyushu.

  • In 1988 FIUTS held a Reunion for which Kay Weber dedicated two years of volunteer service to this project. She had been a host family since 1970, a member of the Board of Trustees in 78-79 and 85-88, office volunteer.

  • The 40th Anniversary Reunion Celebration took place on Aug. 3-9, 1988.Joan Campbell’s 10th Anniversary with FIUTS was 1987. There was a reception honoring her dedication and service on Friday, Oct. 9.
