FIUTS in the ‘50s and '60s

  • The 1950s and early ‘60s saw a vibrant and active FIUTS, with many connections to the local community. The host family program was very strong, and for a period in the mid-60s, it was mandatory for all incoming internationals to have a FIUTS host family.
The first Friendship Tour was held on February 21, 1949, when 35 Chinese students were welcomed on a trip to Spokane. The annual tour during Spring Break continued until the early 70s.
  • 1952 Faculty Wives Club (now Faculty Auxiliary) hosts 1st holiday tea – funds go to FIUTS’ International Students Emergency Fund – small, short-term loan program for students. Funds went to emergency fund until 1980s, when they were designated directly to FIUTS.
  • On May 12, 1953, Mrs. Clark P. Malmo (Jean Malmo) was invited to join the FIUTS Board of Trustees. Jean would become an incredible advocate and supporter of the organization, and took thousands of photographs of FIUTS students around the world. She continued to play a key role in FIUTS programs until her death in 1996. International Shows and travelling shows were a big part of FIUTS activities during this time. And FIUTS administered several scholarships and loan programs for international students.
